Medieval Reenactment Costumes- You Can Be As Period As You Like

Medieval reenactment costumes are among my absolute favorites for versatility. For one, you probably won’t get kicked out of a renaissance festival for wearing a costume that’s too far out of date. For another, the majority of medieval costumes are super comfortable and ideal for lounging around the house. And for another, a T-tunic is super easy to make even without a pattern. I’ve made them without even taking proper measurements.

Naturally, if you want to attend an SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event, you’ll need to at least make an attempt at appropriate garb. Your basic T-tunic will cover most of your bases if you’re attending your first event. For women, it should be long enough to cover your ankles, and for men, a tunic that reaches below the hips, paired with loose sweatpants should be good enough. Many men who join up for the fighting simply cut the collar out of a plain t-shirt and cut a slit down the front to lace up.

If you can’t afford the historical costumes, or the fabric to knock one up for yourself, most SCA groups have Gold Key, which is spare garb and feast gear for those who don’t have any. Of course, if you need the costume for a purpose other than the SCA, you’re better off ordering your tunic off of eBay or similar until you know exactly what you want. After all, most large events will have merchants selling appropriate garb and you can order custom sets from various websites online.
