Historical Costume Shoes:

Period shoes are a must for truly convincing historical costumes. Some time periods are easier to make than others, but all will cost anywhere between $60 and $400 if you choose to purchase, since most are handmade.

Renaissance shoes can fall into either the simple bag shoe (one piece construction), or slightly more complicated and decorative shoes. Shoes tended to look a lot like the modern slipper, though boots are common for men. Boots of course are more expensive, and if you’re into fantasy renaissance costumes, boots are also suitable for pirate wenches and other non-typical female characters.

Civil War shoes are definitely harder to make than renaissance shoes, since they’re usually formed, and soles are sometimes pegged rather than stitched. However, they offer more support than earlier periods, and, of course, are absolutely essential if you’re a Civil War reenactor.

If you need a reenactment shoe pattern, there are plenty available. They may be difficult to find, however, and even more difficult to find the correct time period in the right size, especially if you’re picky about historical accuracy.
