Medieval Reenactment Costumes are what you’ll need for serious reenacting. Groups such as the SCA require at least a modest attempt at period correct clothing, though they will allow clothing that was in vogue during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign. Of course, you’re not limited to the European middle ages costumes, as many reenactors wear garb from all around the world.
Medieval costume patterns are easy to make if you’re interested in very basic costumes. There are certainly more complicated patterns in the period, but a basic t-tunic (or multiple, layered tunics) will serve most historical reenactors well. For plays and parties, there are a number of Simplicity patterns that are quite easy to make, and if you know where to look, you can even find well researched, historically accurate patterns for medieval clothing.
Medieval renaissance costumes technically don’t exist. There are medieval costumes, and there are renaissance costumes. However, many of the basic pieces will work just fine for either time period. In fact, for anything but serious reenactment, you can pretty much use either time period for the other, or even mix and match.
